![]() ![]() In the 1980s it was renamed the Hope Memorial Bridge, after the father of legendary funny man Bob Hope. The funding was approved in 1927, before the economy soured, and a lowered level dedicated to commercial traffic was scrapped. They evoke several different styles all at the same time, from the wings of an Assyrian bull, the winged helm of the Greek god Hermes, and the striking angular, art deco fashion that was demanded at the time. The Guardians of Traffic are eight large figures sculpted on four Berea sandstone pylons on the Hope Memorial Bridge, formerly Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, in Cleveland, Ohio. ![]() They each specify the "spirit of progress through transportation," said the bridge designer, WIlbur Watson. The name change will officially occur after this season. Seven weeks later, those choices had been narrowed to one. The team noted in early June it had sifted through nearly 1,200 options. “I ride my bike across that bridge all the time,” team owner Paul Dolan said, “and I found myself slowing down and staring at them a little more closely in the past few weeks.” The organization selected Guardians over other names it strongly considered, including Buckeyes, Spiders and Walleye. ![]() Now, those monuments, fixtures along the Hope Memorial Bridge for nearly 80 years, have inspired a new name for the baseball team that resides a five-minute walk down the street.
